SUCCESSFUL DOG TRAINING TIPS!
1. THE EARLIER YOU START THE BETTER! While old dogs can learn new tricks, young puppies are like little sponges and haven't developed as many bad habits. Start your training the minute you bring your new puppy or dog home.
2. USE GENTLE AND HUMANE METHODS THAT DO NO HARM. Positive training techniques that are upbeat and motivational will help to keep both you and your dog eager to keep working.
3. AVOID GIVING COMMANDS THAT YOU CANNOT ENFORCE. Every time you give a command that is not complied with nor enforced, your dog learns that they can ignore you and that compliance is optional.
4. AVOID USING YOUR DOG'S NAME NEGATIVELY. Try not to use your dog's name in conjunction to reprimands, warnings or punishment. Your dog should trust that when it hears its name or is called to you, good things happen. Their name should always be a word they respond to with enthusiasm, never fear.
5. THE WHOLE FAMILY SHOULD BE CONSISTENT WITH RULES AND COMMUNICATION WITH YOUR DOG. It is important that the entire family enforce what is expected from your dog and that your dog is receiving consistent messages from everyone.
6. INTEGRATE TRAINING IN EVERY DAY ACTIVITIES. So often we believe we must set aside long hours to train our dogs, when just the opposite is true. Short, easy sessions that we use in everyday activities keep motivation and compliance high. For example, ask your dog to "sit" before you allow them to go outside for a romp in the yard.
7. SPEND QUALITY TIME WITH YOUR DOG. Life is hectic, free time is scare and our dogs pay the price. Remember that dogs are social beings and they look to us to fulfill their lives with positive interaction. At the end of a long day, don't forget that your dog that has been waiting patiently to see you again. Toss a ball, throw a stick or go for a long walk - both you and your dog will be happy you did!
